Following the Cuckmere River, this guided tour takes you on a picturesque and informative walk through Sussex 's countryside near Brighton.
This guided circular walk begins in the Seven Sisters Country Park and flows along the twists and turns of the Cuckmere River - known locally as 'the Snake River' just outside Brighton - until it meets the English Channel. Enjoy the breath-taking views of Cuckmere Haven, as we wind our way towards the sea and the famous 'Seven Sisters' chalk cliffs. At low tide, it is possible to see ironwork in the sea close to the river mouth. This is the wreck of the Polynesia, a German sailing ship, which ran aground west of Beachy Head, laden with a cargo of sodium nitrate, in April 1890. The beach at the river mouth was a popular haunt of Smugglers in the 16th, 17th and 18th Century. The area has also featured in several major films, from Robin Hood to Atonement . There will be plenty for nature lovers to enjoy, as we keep a keen eye out for herons, cormorants and little egrets.
The tour ends in a picturesque, local Sussex café before returning to Brighton where you will have the opportunity to relax with a coffee or tea before returning home, and will give you the opportunity of asking the tour guide any further questions.
